Performing Arts Non-Major Scholarships

The Department of Performing Arts recognizes that some students who demonstrate exceptional ability in music, performance, theatre, or entertainment technology may be choosing to pursue a career in another field. To encourage these students to continue pursuit of their art at the collegiate level, the department awards several $1,000 scholarships to non-majors each year. These scholarships are renewable for up to four years of full-time status.

Students who receive a non-major scholarship must participate in a music ensemble, theatrical production, or radio practicum each semester (which of these activities is required depends on the area under which the scholarship was applied for). Re-applying for the scholarship each year is not required as long as there is satisfactory completion of the participation requirement.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the online application form.
  2. Audition/interview with a representative of the Performing Arts Department. This may be done in person during a Performing Arts Visit Day, at a regional event attended by HU, or via video submission. Audition/interview requirements vary depending on your area of intended participation:
    1. If you are planning to participate in a music ensemble (e.g. choir, symphonic band), you must perform one song.
    2. If you are planning a theatre/film performance emphasis, you must perform one monologue.
    3. If you are planning a theatre/entertainment technology emphasis, submit a short portfolio (e.g. PowerPoint) containing images, videos, descriptions, or other examples of your tech work.

Audition Tips

  1. BE PREPARED! Choose a song, monologue, or portfolio materials that best showcase your voice, instrument, character, or tech work. Rehearse until you are comfortable with your material, and memorize your piece if at all possible.
  2. If you have selected a lengthly piece, shortern your selection to include just the best section--maybe only a single chorus and verse. Monologue auditions should be no longer than 2 minutes; music auditions should be no longer than 4 minutes.
  3. All singers and instrumentalists must have some kind of accompanied music, either printed or recorded. An accompanist will be present at the audition. If you select a song that needs an accompanist, you will need to provide printed music for the accompanist to use during your audition. Your printed music must be in the appropriate key; the accompanist will not transpose for you. Vocalists may NOT sing along with a recording that has a melody line.

Video Auditions

  • While in-person auditions are strongly encouraged, we recognize that this may not be an option for everyone. Therefore, video auditions may be submitted.
  • Files should be shared with music@huntington.edu via WeTransfer or a YouTube link. Please DO NOT attempt to send video files as an e-mail attachment.

The deadline for application for the 2025-26 academic year is April 30, 2025. Review of applications will occur on a rolling basis beginning in January 2025, but all applications submitted prior to the deadline will be given consideration. If a scholarship is awarded, an award letter will be sent to the student, typically within 3-4 weeks of receipt of all application materials, but no later than May 15, 2025.

Questions should be directed to Ryan Long, Performing Arts Department Chair, at rlong@huntington.edu or (260) 359-4257.
