Here are a few myths — and the truths behind them — to consider.

The primary reason many people consider an online degree is convenience. While it is true that online degrees are convenient, it is not easy to juggle family, work, and education, even if the commitment is only one night per week. That’s why careful planning and consideration are essential before you start an online program (or any academic program).

There are many common questions and plenty of misconceptions about online education. To help you decide if an online degree program or a particular school is right for you, here are a few myths — and the truths behind them — to consider.

Myth #1 – Online Classes Are Easier

Truth: When you select a reputable school, you will receive a solid education designed to increase your skills and developed for an online format. Lessons and engagement will be designed to challenge you as an online learner.

Myth #2 – Online Classes Take Less Time

Truth: Often people believe that since they are not attending in the classroom, the overall time commitment will be lower. These individuals fail to consider that most online degree programs still seek student interaction. Interaction is accomplished through message/discussion boards and other communication platforms. Researching, posting, and responding to peers online can consume just as much time as a lively debate inside the classroom.

Myth #3 – The Professors Are Less Available

Truth: Solid online programs have faculty who are trained to work with online students. These faculty understand the needs of online learners and the importance of prompt communication. As you begin your program, contact the professor for each course. You will be surprised how available they are with their time and experience.

Myth #4 – Employers Do Not Respect Online Degrees

Truth: The truth for any educational experience is that your outcomes are ultimately up to you. The effort and intentionality you put into your online program will directly impact your future value to your employer. Be prepared to speak to the tangible lessons you are learning and how you apply your education to your work. Employers will value the experience you gain.
