What software should
I have on my computer?
The computer labs and computer
classrooms are standardized on the Microsoft Office 2007 (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint). Having office
applications that can read and write in formats compatible with these make
the exchanging of files with faculty and student workgroups easier.
Discounted pricing on Microsoft Office products and Windows Vista
are available for enrolled students

Some departments may have other requirements or
recommendations. Please contact your major department to determine if they
have any specific requirements.
Operating
systems
With respect to Windows
operating systems, we recommend MS Windows XP Professional with Service Pack
3 (SP3), XP Home with Service Pack 3 (SP3), or Windows Vista.
For Macintosh we recommend version 10 (MAC OS X) and
prefer the 10.5 (Leopard) version or later.
Anti-virus
package
Due to the increased
exposures to computer viruses, mass mailing worms, and other “malware,”
an anti-virus package is required to be
installed on any computer using the HU network.
HU
will provide a license for Sophos Anti-virus for each student.
Students can choose to use their own anti-virus software, but when a
student is added to the university network they will be asked to present
evidence of the anti-virus package they have installed and present
evidence that it is being updated regularly (the anti-virus package should
include a service to continually update the anti-virus definitions).
With
most new computers an anti-virus package is provided for a limited time
(e.g. 90 days), after which an extension must be purchased to continue to
receive updates to anti-virus definitions. Examples of anti-virus packages
are McAfee and Norton Antivirus.
We
strongly recommend you take advantage of the Sophos Anti-virus
provided at no charge by the university.
Another type of
software that should be considered is anti-spyware software. Free and
purchasable versions of Adaware
by Lavasoft, Spybot Search & Destroy
by PepiMK Software, and SpywareBlaster
from Javacool Software are good solutions. A blocking solution is
preferred over a “scan-and-remove” solution.
