About Technology at Huntington
University
Here is the latest information to get ready for the computing environment at
Huntington University when you arrive on campus.
Anti-virus license
Due to the
increased exposures to computer viruses, mass mailing worms, and other “malware,”
an anti-virus package is required to be installed on any computer using
the HU network. HU will provide a license for Sophos
Anti-virus for each student. Students can choose to use their own
anti-virus software, but as students are added to the university network
they will be asked to present evidence of the anti-virus package they have
installed and that it is being updated regularly (the anti-virus package
should include a service to continually update the anti-virus definitions).
With most new computers an anti-virus package is provided for a limited time
(e.g. 90 days), after which an extension must be purchased to continue to
receive updates to anti-virus definitions. Examples of other anti-virus packages
are McAfee and Norton Antivirus.
We
strongly recommend you take advantage of the Sophos Anti-virus
provided at no charge by the university.
The
licenses are owned by Huntington University. As part of the license agreement,
students who graduate or are no longer currently enrolled at the university
must uninstall the program.
To get your Sophos Anti-virus package, drop off your computer to
Technology Services (SH 115) during business hours. Technology Services
will install the package and will call you when the installation is
finished. If you have a laptop, bring your power adaptor. For desktop unit,
just bring your unit without the keyboard, mouse, and power cord.
Wireless set up for your
desktop computer or laptop
For wireless setup and/or anti-virus installation, drop off your computer to
Technology Services located in Science Hall, room 115 during business
hours (Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM).
HU Network User ID and
Password
Your network user ID is your LastNameFirstInitial (example: John
Doe's id would be doej).
Your initial password is the
last five digits of your social security number. If you do not have a social
security number, please contact Technology Services. You should change your
password after you log into the network.
Forgot your password for your HU User ID? Contact the Call Center at 4090 or
stop by Technology Services in SH 115 during business hours.
Consider using a USB flash
drive for file transfer (papers, etc.). The USB flash drive
makes it easier to store large files. To use a flash drive, you simply plug
the device into a USB port on your computer and it appears as another hard
drive in "My Computer". USB flash drives are the future of data storage. The
Huntington Bookstore sells USB flash drives.
Windows Updates - XP, Vista,
Windows 7
If your computer is using Windows, go to
windowsupdate.microsoft.com to
keep the operating system up-to-date. Download and install all the of the
security patches. Windows XP, Vista, and 7 users should enable automatic Windows updates.
For non-Windows operations systems (e.g. MacOS, Linux), check the vendors'
web sites for latest patches.
