University named to President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll


Huntington, Ind.—Huntington University has been named a member of the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to service throughout the year.

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is an annual recognition program that celebrates exemplary commitment to service and volunteering from institutions of higher education. The President’s Honor Roll increases the public’s awareness of the contributions that colleges and their students make to local communities and the nation as a whole.

Huntington University was noted as playing a critical role in expanding the opportunity for citizens to serve; increasing the capacity of individuals, organizations and communities to become more effective; and demonstrating that service is a critical tool for addressing the challenges that the nation faces.

The Huntington University students, faculty and staff contributed more than 11,450 volunteer hours this year in the greater Huntington and Fort Wayne communities.

The Corporation for National and Community Service recognizes more than 700 colleges and universities for exemplary, innovative and effective community service programs through the Honor Roll program. The Corporation oversees the Honor Roll in collaboration with the Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education.

Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
