Electronic Resources

RichLyn Library subscribes to a number of internet services for the research needs of our patrons. Several of the resources are indexes to periodical articles but many also index newspapers, reports, pamphlets, books, and various other media. The services include vendors such as Ebscohost that provides access to dozens of subject and skill level databases. Off-Campus users either use the Off-Campus Link supplied below or you can access the databases from the my.huntington.edu portal.

America's Historical Newspapers

  Huntington subscribes to a part of the set called Early American Newspapers, Series I, 1690-1786.
Series 1 offers more than 700 historical American newspapers from 23 states and the District of Columbia printed between 1690 and 1876. Focusing largely on the 18th century, Series 1 is based on Clarence S. Brigham's "History and Bibliography of American Newspapers, 1690-1820" and other authoritative bibliographies.
BNET  
  Formerly, Look Smart's Find Articles contains full text articles from thousands of resources. Articles date back to 1984. Articles are take from leading academic, industry and general interest publications.
Ebscohost

  Ebscohost is produced by Ebsco Information Services. The company provides a variety of services to libraries including Full-text and bibliographic databases. There are currently 28 different databases available as part of our Ebscohost package. These databases range from the general MasterFILE premier to the more specific Clinical Pharmacology.
Entrez  
  Entrez is the integrated, text based search and retrieval system used at NCBI for the major databases, including PubMed, Nucleotide and Protein Sequences, Protein Structure, Complete Genomes, Taxonomy, and others. ... Use the Entrez Journals database to search for a journal and then link to records for that journal in the database: ...proper attribution...US National Library of Medicine (NLM)....
The Free Library  
  Free full-text periodical and literature articles covering a multitude of disciplines.

HighBeam Library Research  
  [An] extensive archive of more than 35 million documents from over 3,000 sources -- a vast collection of articles from leading publications, updated daily and going back as far as 20 years. Save your searches, save articles and set up alerts to save time and increase your efficiency. Most entries are citations but there are a few free full text articles.
High Wire Press  
  A very large periodical databases covering many subjects. It retrieves free, full-text, abstracted, and previewed articles.
IngentaConnect  
  IngentaConnect is a comprehensive collection of academic and professional publications. It indexes about 20 million articles, chapters, and reports from 29,500 publications with about 8,000 online entries. Most entries are citations but there are a few free full text articles.
Inspire.Net  
  INSPIRE is Indiana's Virtual Library on the Internet. INSPIRE is a collection of commercial databases and other information resources that can be accessed by Indiana residents using any computer equipped with an Indiana Internet connection and a Web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
JSTOR

  The library subscribes to two JSTOR collections "Arts & Sciences II & V" and "Mathematics and Statistics." The collections provide access to approximately 270 journals in the disciplines of archaeology, economics, history, Asian studies, political science, literature, philosophy, classics, religion, art, sociology, mathematics, and statistics as well as in other key fields in the humanities and social sciences.

Open J-Gate  
  Open J-Gate is an electronic gateway to global journal literature in open access domain. ... Open J-Gate provides seamless access to millions of journal articles available online. Open J-Gate is also a database of journal literature, indexed from 3000+ open access journals, with links to full text at Publisher sites.

  Digital Book Index provides links to more than 142,000 full-text digital books from more than 1800 commercial and non-commercial publishers, universities, and various private sites. More than 100,000 of these books, texts, and documents are available free, while many others are available at very modest cost.
FirstSearch

  A global database providing access to WorldCat and INCat. The WorldCat catalog provides access to books and other materials in libraries worldwide. INCat is a subset of WorldCat with just libraries in Indiana. Use FirstSearch if you are making an Interlibrary Loan request for a book or video.
GoogleBooks  
  The search engine includes excerpts and full-text digital books from Amazon, and several renowned research libraries from across the country. ...a good supplement to First Search/World Cat.
WorldCat.Org  
  orldCat.Org is a free online service that gives a unified library catalog from libraries throughout the world. It provides bibliographic and location information about books, monographs, pamphlets, journal titles, audiovisuals, etc. from public, school, special, and academic libraries throughout the world. It also provides MLA, APA, Chicago, Turabian, and Harvard citations for each of the items.

  CountryWatch provides critical country-specific intelligence and data to over 4000 clients including public and private sector organizations with overseas operations and global interests. In addition, CountryWatch provides country information to large media audiences in various venues as part of its media strategy.
CQ Researcher

  CQ Researcher is often the first source that librarians recommend when researchers are seeking original, comprehensive reporting and analysis on issues in the news. Founded in 1923 as Editorial Research Reports, CQ Researcher is noted for its in-depth, unbiased coverage of health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy. Reports are published weekly in print and online 44 times a year by CQ Press, a division of Congressional Quarterly Inc.

  EBSCO's Encyclopedia of Animals offers in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals. Designed mainly for the elementary school student the database provides students with thousands of easy-to-read entries about mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, dinosaurs and prehistoric animals. Each entry begins with a simple category breakdown of the animal including Kingdom, Class, Order, Genus & Species, and Geographical Locale as well as a detailed description.
Encyclopedia Britannica Online

  Britannica Online is a one stop search service for several reference databases including encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesaurus and atlases. In addition to providing answers to a multitude of questions, Britannica Online also leads users to additional information about their topics through related articles, links to outside Web sites, and bibliographies.

  Encyclopedia.com, the Internet's premiere free encyclopedia, provides users with more than 57,000 frequently updated articles from the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. Each article is enhanced with links to newspaper and magazine articles as well as pictures and maps - all provided by HighBeam Research.
Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia

 

  For students and adults alike, the Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia database indexes over 25,000 records, covering an array of topics. Full text for each record may be easily accessed by double clicking on the topic from the display. The database contains various images, offers brief biographies as well as information in a variety of subject areas. This database is updated annually.

MLA Directory of Periodicals

  The MLA Directory of Periodicals contains all information available on the journals and series on the bibliography's Master List of Periodicals. This information has been gathered by the MLA staff with the cooperation of MLA bibliographers and the editors represented in these listings. Over 7,100 titles are included; of these, over 4,400 are currently indexed. The entries list editorial addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, e-mail addresses, frequency of publication, descriptions of the periodicals' scopes, circulation figures, subscription prices and addresses, advertising information, and submission guidelines. The directory also provides statistics on how many articles and book reviews the periodicals publish each year, as well as how many are submitted.
