- Led by
senior Luke Smith, the Foresters dominated the #12-ranked Division 1
Lindenwood University 84-67 to capture the Ness Bros. Hall of Fame
Classic title.
In a game where the Lions never had a lead, the Foresters left no
doubt in the minds of their fans that they mean business this year.
Both teams looked polished right out of the gates with HU hitting
seven of their first ten shots and Lindenwood knocking down six of
their first ten shots. But turnovers allowed the Foresters to
slowly pull away. Up by 12 points with just over eight minutes left
in the half, HU scored nine points off seven Lion miscues to open up
a 50-30 lead at the 1:51 mark. Lindenwood closed out the half
scoring back-to-back threes to give the Foresters a 14 point
halftime lead.
After both teams put on a shooting clinic in the first half, they
both cooled off considerably in the second half. Midway through the
half the Foresters went cold from the field, scoring four points
over a five-minute span to allow the Lions to get within six points,
68-62, with eight minutes left in the contest. But Forester seniors
Luke Smith and Kevin Kyle took over the game scoring HU’s final 12
points of the contest to secure the 84-67 upset over Lindenwood.
Establishing a new career-high, Smith led all scorers with 25 points
and was named the Ness Bros. Hall of Fame MVP. Kyle finished with
19 points and a game-high 9 rebounds. Kellen Zawadzki and Tyler
Shively chipped in 15 and 13 points respectively. The Lions were
led by Joey Parker and Richard Rose who each tossed in 15 points.
Joining Smith on the All-Tournament team were teammates Kevin Kyle,
Tyler Shively and Caleb Kennedy. Lindenwood’s Joey Parker and
Toriano Adams also earned All-Tournament honors.
For the game, the Foresters shot 50.9% from the field (29-57) while
Lindenwood connected on 43.9% (25-57). HU finished with seven
turnovers compared to 14 for the Lions.
