Biographical Note 

Milton Wright was born 1828 in Indiana and was the father of Wilbur and Orville Wright, the first to successfully achieve powered flight. In 1843 Milton Wright was converted to Christianity and joined the Church of the United Brethren in Christ in 1897.

In 1850 Milton Wright preached his first sermon and in 1852 he was granted a quarterly conference license. One year later he was granted his annual license from White River Conference. In 1857 he served as missionary to the Pacific coast and taught at Sublimity College (California). Milton Wright was ordained by Bishop David Edwards in 1858. He was elected presiding elder of Marion district (Indiana) in 1861 and later in 1867.

In 1868 Milton Wright was appointed as professor of Hartsville College’s new theological department making him the first official Theological Professor in the United Brethren in Christ. In 1877 Milton Wright is elected Bishop by General Conference. His term as Bishop ended in 1881 and he was later re-elected in 1885, this term continued until he retied as Bishop in 1905. During the division of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ in 1889, he maintained his allegiance to the old constitution and was a leader throughout this crisis. Milton Wright died in 1917 at the age of 88.

Scope Note 

The Milton Wright Collection contains various correspondences and articles written and edited by Milton Wright. It also contains bibliographies, photocopied articles and biographical information on Milton Wright as well as a collection of books owned by Milton Wright from his theological library. Most of the collection is focused on his letters and articles as well as numerous articles on Wilbur and Orville and their achievements in powered flight.
