“This career probably won’t make you a millionaire. However, it will lead you into a career that is very fulfilling and will truly give you an opportunity to impact and enhance the quality of life of others.”

Sports are his life — and he loves every minute of it.

As the sports and aquatics director at the Whitley County Family YMCA in Columbia City, Ind., Kameron Bailey is charged with making sure everyone is learning various activities and having a good time doing it.

“I was always involved with sports through the YMCA and the parks department in Columbia City,” said the 2010 grad. “I have always had a passion in being active no matter what the sport, activity or event was.”

Having played sports in high school and then running track at HU, it was a natural choice for Bailey to major in recreation management in college. It was the respect that the programs earned from area businesses and organizations that brought him to Huntington.

After graduation, Bailey found the job at the Y by staying in contact with the executive director. His efforts paid off when she called and said there was an opening and that he should apply.

Today, Bailey is the head of more than 40 individuals — coaches, lifeguards and swim instructors. And while he stays busy, he says that he loves the flexibility and the constant change in his job, depending on the season.

“I run all of the sports and youth programs which include youth basketball, fall soccer, spring soccer, flag football, volleyball, gymnastics and toddler tumbling. I also am in charge of running the pool and aquatic programs,” he said. “One of the biggest obligations of the pool is working with our swim team. Last year, our swim team had 80 participants which makes it one of the larger teams in northern Indiana.”
