He wanted to grow up to be a doctor ... so he did

Alum works toward dream at medical school
Brandon Tanner describes benefits of studying biology at Huntington University, a Christian college.

“HU just kind of felt right. It felt like home. It felt like I was supposed to be there.”

Like every young child, Brandon Tanner wanted to grow up to be a doctor. Like so many others, though, he didn’t grow out of that dream.

“I think everyone says, ‘I want to be a doctor. I want to be an astronaut.’ I just never grew out of my doctor phase,” he said with a chuckle.

Tanner, a 2011 HU biology pre-med graduate, is in his second year of medical school at Indiana University.

“Everyone tells you it’s really different and exhausting and consumes your life, but you can’t really describe it without experiencing it,” he said. “HU gave me a good foundation.”

Tanner started looking into colleges during his junior year of high school and found the right fit at HU.

“HU just kind of felt right,” he said. “It felt like home. It felt like I was supposed to be there.”

And after graduation, the transition from a small Christian school to a big state college was made easy because of the preparation that Huntington gave him — from small classes to one-on-one attention from the faculty.

“I wanted to stay in state. IU has a great reputation for med school,” he said. “That was always my top choice so I was really excited when I was accepted.”
