Trent Huffman needed an internship to complete his bachelor’s degree in recreation management, so he sought out the Parkview Huntington Family YMCA. Through the Enterprise Resource Center, Trent, who was a senior at the time, completed the requirements for his degree and gained some hands-on experience in his field.
He participated in a variety of activities that are part of his recreation management, such as recruiting volunteers, setting up for practices and games and attending meetings.
“During my internship, I was responsible for the youth soccer and basketball programs, as well as helping to develop a wood bat baseball tournament,” said Trent of Angola, Ind.
Trent’s internship gave him experience working with different people on a daily basis and learning how to handle a variety of situations. In addition, he learned the value and importance of strong communication and organizational skills.
“I was also fortunate enough to be there during a building project, which helped me understand that process,” he said.
Trent appreciated working with the YMCA, saying, “The best thing about the internship was the opportunity to work for a great organization. The YMCA does things right, and it was fun to be a part of the organization.”
Trent gives this advice to students that are considering internships: “Look for them early and do more than one if possible.”
