The Forester women ended the MCC regular season tied for fifth place and finished the same in the MCC Tennis Championships held at Concordia High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
In singles play, HU freshman Stephanie Strong was the lone Forester to reach the finals. Playing at #1, Strong defeated Janelle Koenig (Marian) 6-4, 6-0 and Diana Diaz (Goshen) 6-3, 6-3 before falling to Sarah Bauss (IWU) 6-2, 6-3 in the finals. "Stephanie had a great season," said Coach Turner. "Her only two losses of the year were to the conference champion. This is the first time one of my girls has made it to the finals in the conference tournament. I am really encouraged about next year."
Strong also was the lone Forester to be selected to the MCC All-Conference team. Joining Strong on the list were Sarah Bauss (IWU), Robin Braun (Bethel), Katie Clark (Taylor), Diana Diaz (Goshen), Emily Lamport (Bethel), Erin Nuesh (IWU), Kelley Pence (Taylor), and Julie Wegener (Grace). IWU's Coach Terry Porter was named the Conference Coach of the Year.
At #2 singles for HU, Kendra Ganz lost to Emily Lamport (Bethel) 6-2, 6-1. Jessica Deter lost to Karley Beebe (Spring Arbor) 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at #3. Katie Sprunger fell to Kristine Bolinger (Taylor) 6-2, 6-0 at #4. At #5, Dawn Lauer lost to Andrea Yoder (St. Francis) 2-6, 6-0, 6-1, and Liz Hull fell 6-2, 6-1 to Sherra Milender (Bethel) at #6.
In doubles' action, Strong and Ganz picked up HU's final point by knocking off Braun/Milender (Bethel) 6-3, 7-6(4) at #1 doubles. They fell 6-3, 7-6(4) to Braun and Milender (Bethel) in the semi-finals. The other two doubles teams did not compete as a result of their last place finish in MCC regular season competition.
Indiana Wesleyan won the event with 24 points, marking the 14th consecutive year that the Wildcats have shared or earned the title out right. Taylor was second with 11 points followed by Marian (9), Bethel (8), Goshen, Huntington, and St. Francis (T-3), and Spring Arbor and Grace (T-1).
