Winona Lake, Ind. - After a 2-0 win over the Lancers of Grace College on Saturday afternoon, the Forester women’s soccer team is only one of three teams to remain unbeaten in conference play.
As has been the case all season, the Foresters have had a variety of players step up and this weekend was no different as two rookies came up big to pace HU offensively. Eight minutes into the match, Erin Barclay stole the ball from a Grace defender from 30 out and took it straight to goal, placing a shot over the keeper hitting opposite side netting for an early 1-0 lead.
Twenty minutes later, Amy Snider subbed in and on her first touch of the match, found the back of the net to give the Foresters a 2-0 lead that wouldn’t be challenged.
"The coaching staff felt like we had a good game plan put together and the girls came out today and really executed it,” commented Coach Burgher. “Most of all, our girls played with a ton of heart. We had girls all over the field who were leading by their actions. Sam Barclay made a game changing save for us, Jessica Krause arguably won the game for us in the air, Erin Barclay and Amy Snider put in goals and Brittany Hartman gave a relentless 90 minutes up top. I could realistically point out something great each player did. This was a team win and this is exactly where we expected to be after two conference games."
"We had five shots on frame and we scored two goals, for us that isn't lucky and it isn't an accident. We work on finishing, we take it seriously. You never know how many chances you'll get in a game so we try to make the most of each one."
"We are going to enjoy this win today, but we start preparing from Taylor tomorrow. Right now there is a 3-way tie for first place in conference, between SAU, Taylor, and us. Wednesday is a big game for us."
Sam Barclay recorded her seventh shutout of the season. She finished with seven saves.
On Wednesday, Huntington (8-2-1, 2-0) will go head-to-head with Taylor University in a battle of the unbeatens.
