Huntington, Ind.— The Huntington College Athletics Department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of August 30 – September 5, 2004. Tennis senior Kyleigh Gast and men’s soccer freshman Joel Sanders earned the honors for their excellent efforts during the week’s competitions.

Kyleigh Gast, an elementary special education major from Claypool, Ind. (Tippecanoe Valley High School), went undefeated during the week for the Forester women’s tennis team. Gast was the lone double winner in Huntington’s 5-4 loss to Grace College. She won a tough three-setter 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in singles and paired with Jessica Deter for a convincing 8-1 win at #2 doubles. In the Foresters’ 5-4 win over the University of St. Francis, Gast went 6-3, 6-4 for the win at #3 singles and again paired with Deter for the 8-6 win at #2 doubles. The tennis team next travels to Hanover College on Wednesday, September 8, at 3:00 p.m.

Freshman Joel Sanders, an elementary education major from Fort Wayne, Ind. (Snider High School), has made his presence known early with the men’s soccer team. In the Foresters’ last three matches, Sanders has tallied three goals and four assists to help Huntington get off to a 2-2 start on the season. In the Foresters’ 2-1 win over Walsh University, Sanders scored a goal and assisted on the other. In Huntington’s 11-0 win over Taylor University-Fort Wayne, he had two goals and two assists, and added an assist in the Foresters’ 3-2 overtime loss to Indiana Tech. The Foresters next hosts Franklin College on Tuesday, September 7, at 4:00 p.m.
The Huntington College Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past seven years, Huntington has produced 49 NAIA All-American honors and 91 All-American Scholar Athlete honors.
