Foresters escape first MCC match with 1-0 win

Fort Wayne, Ind. - The rainy weather didn’t hinder the opening day of MCC play as the Forester women’s soccer team moved their game to The Plex’s indoor facility where they came away with a 1-0 victory over Goshen College.

Playing on a much quicker surface than a grass field, both teams struggled to put together much offense but it was the Foresters who made the most of their opportunities. Midway through the first period, Kate Bienz took her defender down the left side, pulled the ball back and drilled it from 25 out for what proved to be the game-winner.

"After everything that went into this game, we were happy to leave with a victory,” said Coach Burgher. “It was pretty ugly but after the first week of conference, half the teams have a win and half have a loss. We are happy to be in the win column."

"Goshen played a great game, but I know even in ugly games I have multiple players that can do something special and win a game. Kate Bienz was that player tonight. It was a team effort to win the game, but Kate's goal was all her."

HU outshot the Maple Leafs 13-5. HU keeper Sam Barclay grabbed three saves and was credited with the shutout.

Over the last seven matches, the Foresters (7-2-1, 1-0) have given up only four goals. They are back in action on Saturday when the travel to Grace College for a 2:00 p.m. kick-off.
