Huntington, Ind. - Courtney Baker, a standout multiple-sport athlete from New Castle Chrysler High School in New Castle, Indiana has signed a letter of intent to continue both her basketball and soccer careers at Huntington University next fall.
On the hardwood, Baker has earned numerous accolades during her four years in the Trojan basketball program. The 5’6 point guard is the 2011 Area Player of the Year, a McDonalds All-American nominee, an IBCA Honorable Mention All-State selection, a three-time All-Conference and All-Area pick and an ICGSA Second Team All-State member. She was also recently named to the AP High Honorable Mention All-State Basketball Team.
As a four-year varsity starter, she accumulated a career record of 58-25 and finished second in school history for career assists (357), third in career steals (267) and eighth in career points (884). As a senior this past season, Baker averaged 16.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 3.9 steals to help lead New Castle to a North Central Conference Championship.
Huntington University basketball coach, Lori Culler, is looking forward to Baker’s contributions to the team. “Courtney comes from a very successful program and knows not only how to win, but what it takes to win consistently,” said Coach Culler. “She has a tremendous work ethic to go along with her basketball abilities. She does a great job of getting teammates involved with her court vision and awareness, but also has is a soft shooting touch to make her a scoring threat as well. Her quickness and refuse to lose intensity will also make her a valuable addition on the defensive end. We expect Courtney to help us from the get-go.”
Baker also has displayed her athletic prowess on the soccer field. This two-time Area Player of the Year and four-time All-Conference pick holds the Trojans’ record for career goals with 106. She amassed a career record of 54-20-2 and finished with 25 career assists. As a senior caption, she led her team to the school’s first sectional championship and set the record for goals in a single season with 42.
Ryan Burgher, Huntington’s women’s soccer coach is expecting great things from Baker. "Courtney is going to be an amazing addition to our team. Her speed, skill, and work rate makes her a very dangerous player," said Coach Burgher. "She is a natural goal scorer and I'm confident that she is going to continue to prove that at Huntington. Courtney scored 69 goals in her junior and senior years being double and triple teamed at New Castle. Next year we are returning 80% of our goals. Court is going to have a lot more freedom giving her many more scoring opportunities, and that's something that I'm really excited about."
Courtney is the daughter of Ron and Joni Baker of New Castle, Indiana.
