HU men make history by winning the 2013 Cardinal Classic

MUNCIE, Ind. - It was history in the making this past weekend as the HU men’s bowling team notched the program’s first tournament win since its inception last year. They tallied 6,983 pins to claim the 2013 Cardinal Baker Classic title.

Bowling a total of 40 Baker games on very demanding lane conditions throughout the weekend at Munsee Lanes in Muncie (Ind.), the Foresters dropped as low as fourth in the standings before mounting an impressive comeback in the final four Baker games (146-266-204-183) to take top honors.

“It was an awesome way to finish and win a tournament and lots of fun to watch,” said Coach Bischoff. “The guys were amazing all weekend and just kept fighting.”

Team members included Tyler Neff, Connor Brown, Seth Walker, Joe Miller, James Knapp and Derek Beckler.

Oberlin took second with 6,956 pins followed by Bowling Green (6890), IU (6834), Ball State (6803) and Miami of Ohio (5781).

The men’s JV team finished second with 6,346 pins behind Bowling Green (6688) and ahead of IU (5974) and Oberlin (5040).

The Forester women’s team also had a solid outing, leading through the 37th Baker game on Sunday before succumbing to 7th-ranked Bowling Green in the final three games to finish second by a mere 22 pins.

Despite the disappointing finish, Coach Bischoff is pleased with his team’s performance, “The ladies just keep getting better and better each tournament, gaining more and more experience and confidence. I’m very proud of them as strikes were hard to come by and so were spares at times on the very difficult lane conditions.”

Bowling Green captured the title with 6,696 pins followed by HU (6674), Alma (6353) and Ball State (6053).

Heading into Christmas break, the Foresters are off until the Storm Hoinke Bearcat Tournament in Cincinnati on January 11-12.
