HUNTINGTON, Ind. - It was the perfect way to wrap-up the regular season as the Foresters honored their lone senior Kelsey Green by topping the visiting Cougars of Spring Arbor University 75-58 Saturday afternoon.
With this win, HU (19-9, 10-7) wraps up sole possession of third place in the conference standings and will host No. 6 Marian University in first round action of the MCC tournament Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
Typically known for their lock-down defense, it was the Foresters’ red-hot shooting that turned heads Saturday afternoon. They sizzled the nets for a season-best 68.3% on 28-for-41 shooting which included going 10-for-15 behind the arc for 66.7%.
Pazia Speed led the charge with 17 points, nine of which came from 3-point land. Her back court companions in Lauren Meese and Allison Greene also camped out behind the arc to each drop in a trio of treys. Greene finished with 15 points while Meese added 13 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Taylor Foley came off the bench to score 12 points and tally five rebounds and four assists. Kelsey Green ripped down a game-high ten rebounds.
Facing a 16-15 deficit with just under 12 minutes left in the first half, the Foresters caught fire to finish the period 10-for-13 and jump out to a 42-27 lead by halftime. Speed and Foley did most of their damage in the first twenty minutes by scoring 13 and ten points respectively.
After a quiet first half, Greene picked up where Speed left off by scoring 12 points in the opening seven minutes of the second stanza to give HU a commanding 62-36 lead. The Foresters maintained their lead over the next seven minutes but the Cougars didn’t go down without a fight. They chipped away at the lead to outscore the Foresters by nine in the closing minutes to close the gap but it wouldn’t be enough as HU cruised to the 17-point win.
Ashley Stelter finished with 15 points to pace Spring Arbor. Joining her in double figures was Audra Norris with 12 and Sarah Wellman with 10.
