Foresters pick up conference road win

FOR RELEASE
2010-01-13
Looking to avenge the loss suffered last year when the Foresters (12-5, 3-2) traveled to Spring Arbor (1-16, 0-7), HU accomplished just that by defeating the Cougars 58-45.

Things started off slow for the Foresters as the Cougars jumped to an early 4-0 lead. Lauren Meese finally knocked down a trey to get things started for HU. Apparently it was just what the Foresters needed as they went on to score the next nine points to go up 14-4 with just under 13 minutes on the clock.

The next 13 minutes saw each team take turns going on short scoring spurts. Twice the Cougars cut HU's lead to five but the Foresters always answered by pushing the lead back to double digits. Huntington enjoyed the final spurt of the half as they headed into the locker room with a nine-point lead, 31-22.

The second half started much like the first with the Cougars scoring the first five points in the opening minutes to pull within four, 31-27. After both team traded baskets, the Foresters put together a 21-7 run to take their biggest lead of contest, 55-36, with just over eight minutes to play. The run was boosted by some red hot shooting in which Meese hit back-to-back threes followed by Jenna Donaldson cashing in a long ball of her own. Spring Arbor outscored the Foresters by six in the final eight minutes of play but it wouldn't be enough as Huntington cruised to the 13-point victory.

Meese led the Foresters with 17 points on 5-for-7 shooting behind the arc, a team-high nine rebounds and four steals. Donaldson and Sarah Miller each turned in double digit performances with 16 and 11 points respectively. Melissa Tejkl was the lone Cougar in double digits with 12.

The Foresters return to the Merillat Complex on Saturday to face Saint Francis at 1:00 p.m.
