Fort Wayne, Ind. - It was a game that anyone watching the MCC opener at Hutzell Gym on Wednesday night won't soon forget as the No. 13 Forester women’s basketball team mounted a fast and furious comeback in the final six minutes to steal a 68-65 road win from 7th-ranked University of Saint Francis (5-3, 0-1).
After taking a 35-31 lead into halftime behind Pazia Speed’s 14 points, the Foresters watched their lead slip away within the opening minutes of the second period. Known for their ability to score quickly and mercilessly, the Cougars lived up to their reputation by outscoring HU 26-11 over the next ten minutes to take a commanding 64-48 lead with 6:39 to go.
Just when things looked bleak for the Foresters, a baseline jumper by Courtney Baker and a long bomb by Liesl Davenport gave the visiting fans something to cheer about as the lead was trimmed to 11 with just under five minutes remaining.
Davenport then spear-headed a comeback for the ages by scoring six points from HU’s crippling full-court press to outscore a stunned Cougar squad 15-1. The Cougars’ only score came on an Amanda Pedro free throw with 1:42 to play to give USF a 65-63 lead. Twenty seconds later Speed gave the Foresters the go ahead with a trey from the corner.
Saint Francis misfired on two shots in the waning seconds and it was Davenport who once again came up big for the Foresters. She hauled in the rebound, was fouled with .8 seconds remaining and calmly sank both free tosses to secure the win.
Davenport finished with a career-high 18 points. Joining her in double digits was Speed with 17 and Kelsey Green with 12. Lauren Meese dished out a game-high five assists and pulled down a team-high 9 boards. Pedro tossed in 22 points for the Cougars while Myqueisha Bratton and Kayla Mullins added 16 and 12 points respectively. Meghan Prible grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Foresters head into Thanksgiving break with a 4-2 record, 1-0 in league play. They take the court again on Wednesday, November 30, when the host Marian University at 7:00 p.m.
