The NAIA Division I 8th-ranked St. Xavier Cougars (9-3) proved too tough for the Foresters (8-5) as they ran away from HU for the 93-65 win in the second round of the St. Xavier Christmas tournament.
The Foresters struggled early against St. Xavier’s full court defensive pressure committing 20 turnovers in the first half, but a 10 for 10 effort at the foul line kept HU within nine (38-29) at the break.
In the second half, the Foresters handled the defensive pressure better, but the Cougars knocked down 61.3% of their field goal attempts (19-31) to put the game out of reach.
St. Xavier’s Kathlyn McClain topped all scorers in the game with 19 points on 5-7 shooting, including 3-4 for behind the arc. Jackie Heine added 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Lauren Davenport paced four double digit scorers for HU with 15 points. Courtney Beerbower had 14 points, Jenna Donaldson added 13 and Kendra Stahl finished with 10.
The Foresters will face Spring Arbor University in the third place game on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. CST.
