Smelser, Johnson named Athletes of Week

Huntington, Ind.—The Huntington University Athletic Department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 30-Nov. 5. Women’s volleyball freshman Brittney Smelser and men’s cross country sophomore Nick Johnson earned the honors for their outstanding efforts during the week’s competitions.

Brittney Smelser, a business management major from Huntington, Ind. (Huntington North High School), helped lead Huntington to a win over Grace College in their final regular season match. Smelser stepped in for senior Renee Biberstine, an outside hitter sidelined with an injury, and led the team with 16 kills. Smelser is second on the team averaging 2.8 kills per game. The Foresters are 26-12 on the season and play at Taylor University in the first round of the Mid-Central Conference Tournament on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.

Nick Johnson, an exercise science major from Huntington, Ind. (Huntington North High School), led the Foresters to a fourth place finish in the NAIA Region VIII Championships by placing eleventh in the 8K race with a time of 25:41. The sophomore also earned NAIA All-Region honors as a result of his top 12 finish. Johnson now awaits word as to whether he will qualify as an individual to participate in the NAIA National Championship in Louisville, Ky. on Nov. 18.
