HU ties for first in Dearborn tourney

The Foresters (13-5) won three of four matches at the University of Michigan Dearborn tournament to earn a first place tie with Indiana Tech and Michigan Dearborn.
HU's only loss came in its first match of the weekend event falling in three straight 30-26, 30-25, 30-21 to Indiana Tech. The Foresters committed too many unforced errors which led to numerous free points for the Warriors. Renee Biberstine had seven kills and 15 digs for HU and Tiffany Malfait added five kills. Kayley Cervenka tallied five blocks, Alyssa Schroeder dished out 25 assists, Stephanie Stearns had 22 digs and Amanda Meyers had two aces.

In their second match, the Foresters got off to a slow start against Goshen College, but rallied for the 25-30, 27-30, 30-16, 30-20, 15-12 win. Biberstine again led HU's attack with 12 kills. Cervenka added 11 kills and a team-high seven blocks. Brittney Smelser had 10 kills, four blocks and three aces. Schroeder had 30 assists and Stearns dug 25 balls.

On Saturday, the Foresters made quick work of Grace Bible College with a 30-16, 30-16, 30-15 victory. Smelser and Heidi Christner each had 11 kills. Cervenka again led team with four blocks. Kellie Hanson had 27 assists and 10 digs. Stearns tallied 15 digs and Meyers and Natasha Gayday each served four aces.

In their final match of the weekend, HU knocked off the host Wolves 30-15, 30-22, 25-30, 24-30, 15-12 to earn the first place tie. Biberstine continued her hot play with 16 kills and two aces. Amy Wilson added 10 kills and 25 digs. Malfait had seven blocks to lead the team. Schroeder had an all-round game with 46 assists, six blocks, 22 digs and two aces and Stearns added a team-high 39 digs.

"We finally played consistent the whole match and Steph was fabulous," said Coach Schroeder. " We passed very well and were able to run a lot of combination plays to freeze Dearborn's middle blockers, which allowed us to go one-on-one with our outside hitters."

Biberstine and Schroeder were selected to the all-tournament team.
