MARION, Ind. - Sophomore Gretchen Spahr and junior Cendall Ogle each brought home a top finish at the 108th annual Little State Championships held at Indiana Wesleyan University over the weekend.
The Indiana Little State Championship is comprised of collegiate teams in the state of Indiana from the NAIA, NCAA Division II and Junior College levels.
Not only did Spahr bring home gold in the 5000 meter run; but her winning time of 18:12.7 also shattered the HU record of 18:24.75 held by Julie Lowe.
Ogle also had a strong outing by earning 18 points for the Foresters. In addition to finishing first in the 800 meter run with a winning time of 2:23.5, nearly three second faster than her closest competitor, Ogle also ran to a second place finish in the 1500 meter run in a PR of 4:51.01.
Brianna Gregory finished eighth in the 100 meter dash. She ran a 13.26 in the finals but established a new PR and moved into seventh in the Huntington record books based on her prelim finish of 12.83.
Other point-getters for HU included Shana Christian in the 400 meter dash (4th, 1:02.40) and Krista Wood in steeplechase (5th, 12:01.03*PR).
The University of Indianapolis captured the women’s title with 227.5 points followed by Taylor (148), Bethel (119), St. Joseph’s (91), Indiana Wesleyan (89), Vincennes (44), HU (43), Marian (31), Grace (15.5), Goshen (8) and Saint Francis (1).
It was an impressive outing for Daniel DeBoni as he set two new PRs and scored over half of the HU men’s points by placing third in the 100 meter dash (11.11) and fourth in the 200 meter dash (22.81). Both personal bests came in the prelims where he ran a 10.90 in the 100, the third fastest time in HU history, and a 22.27 in the 200, good for fifth place in the Forester record books.
Huntington’s other points came by way of Nathan Rupp in the 10,000 meter run (8th, 33:49.74), the 4x100 meter relay team (4th, 44.22) and Jacob Nash in high jump (8th, 1.88m).
The University of Indianapolis won the men’s title with 152 points followed by Indiana Wesleyan (131), Taylor (115), St. Joseph’s (79), Vincennes (79), Bethel (67), Marian (65.5), Grace (50), Goshen (48.5), HU (18), Saint Francis (5) and Indiana East (5).
The Foresters are back in action this weekend to compete in the Manchester University Invitational.
