Freshman Lauren Ward threw a one-hit shutout and struck out a career-high 16 batters to lead the Foresters to their first of two wins over Grace College. Ward got the 8-0 victory in game one and in the nightcap, Ashley Scally picked up the 9-3 win.
Ward's outstanding performance on the mound was backed up by a solid defensive effort and an offense that produced eight runs off 10 hits. Scally led the Forester offense with three hits, including a double, two RBI and a run scored. Kendra Stahl scored two runs and had two hits, including a double, two RBI, and two stolen bases.
In game two, the Lancers took an early 2-0 lead after three innings of play, but HU's bats heated up as they scored nine runs over the final four innings to earn their first sweep of the season. The Foresters again came up with 10 hits in the game with Stahl, Scally, Keri Badenhop and Brittany Gower each coming up with two. Stahl and Scally also drove in two runs apiece. Scally allowed three runs on eight Lancer hits while striking out nine and walking two.
With the two wins, the Foresters improve to 6-14 on the season and even their record at 4-4 in conference play. With four wins midway through the conference schedule, HU has already doubled its total victories in MCC play as they posted a 2-14 record a year ago.
