HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Playing its third doubleheader in three days, the Forester softball team took a break from conference play to split a pair of games with Siena Heights University on Saturday, 4-5, 12-4.
Huntington played catch up in the opener. After trailing 5-1 through the first five innings, Lindsay Shellabarger kept things interesting with a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth to highlight a three-run inning but HU would get no closer as the Saints held on for the win.
Katie Bowers topped the Foresters by going 3-for-3 at the plate. Allison Greene and Annie Weaver each picked up a pair of hits while Shellabarger scored a run and logged two RBI with her round-tripper.
Emily Puterbaugh took the loss. She gave up seven hits, five runs, three earned, three walks while striking out five.
HU came alive at the plate in the nightcap. Behind Greene’s three hits and two RBI, the Foresters went 16-for-24 on their way to a lopsided five inning 12-4 win.
Up 5-4 heading into the fourth, Coach Gower’s squad erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the frame to bring a quick ending to the day. HU sent 11 batters to the plate and collected seven hits, three for extra bases, to catapult ahead 12-4. Kaylin Yon proceeded to work a 1-2-3 fifth inning to wrap things up for the hot-handed Foresters.
In addition to Greene’s three hits, HU’s first six batters all collected a pair of hits. Emily O’Leary added four RBI and two runs scored to her totals.
Yon recorded her third win in as many days. She went the distance allowing five hits, four runs and two walks while striking out two.
Huntington (5-5, 2-2) is back in action on Tuesday when the travel to Marian University for a 3:00 p.m. matchup with the Knights.
