Huntington, Ind. - The Forester softball team opened up MCC play with a two-game sweep (3-0, 5-1) at Indiana Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon to remain perfect on the season at 10-0.
Junior ace Molly Long made sure the Foresters got off on the right foot in conference play by taking care of business on the mound. In game one, she picked up her third shutout of the year, giving up four hits and fanning ten batters in seven innings of work.
Allison Greene got things rolling offensively for HU with a single up the middle in the top of the second. After stealing second, she came around to score on Brandi Gower's single to give HU the early 1-0 lead.
Greene again sparked the Foresters in the fourth with a lead-off double. Aubrey Garner than added the exclamation point to the inning with a two-run shot over the center field fence to put the game out of reach as HU cruised to the 3-0 win.
Garner finished with two hits and two RBI to lead the Foresters. Bowers added three hits and Greene chipped in two hits and scored two runs.
In the nightcap, Long again took the mound to pick up her second win of the day. She gave up an unearned run on five hits and one walk while striking out eight.
The Foresters wasted no time taking control of the game behind Brita Kuiper's two-run double in HU's first at-bats. Huntington added two more in the second with a little help from the Wildcat pitcher who walked Gower and Garner to open the inning. Katie Knous smacked a single to load the bases and then Bowers drew another base on balls to plate the Foresters' first run. Taylor Amber wrapped up the scoring with an infield single to give HU a commanding 4-0 lead.
Wesleyan got one back in the bottom of the sixth but the Foresters matched that in seventh to wrap-up the 5-1 victory.
Garner and Bowers finished with two hits apiece as the Foresters pounded out nine hits in the game.
Next up for Huntington is a trip to Taylor University on Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
