MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Forester softball team wrapped up third place in the MCC standings with two wins over Mount Vernon Nazarene University Wednesday afternoon at Cougar Field.
In a pair of games they never trailed, Huntington claimed an 8-3 win in game one and followed up with a 7-4 victory in the nightcap. With these wins, HU improves to 25-15, 12-6 in conference play.
The Foresters pushed two runs across in the top of the first thanks to a combination of timely hitting, two Cougar errant throws and savvy base-running. Peyton Klinkhamer singled through the right side and made her way home thanks to two wild pitches and the Cougars’ first throwing error. Katie Bowers picked up HU’s second hit of the inning, took advantage of another MVNU error and eventually stole home to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars got one back in their half of the frame but HU went to work again in the second to plate three more runs. Allison Greene logged an RBI sacrifice bunt, Klinkhamer doubled in a run and Bowers tallied a run scoring infield single to extend the lead to 5-1.
Brandi Gower got into the action in the fourth with an RBI single up the middle to tack on an insurance run. Both teams plated a pair of runs in the final inning with HU’s scores coming by way of an Amy Snider RBI single and double steal that allowed Knous to sneak home.
Molly Long (15-9) was credited with the win on the mound. She gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks while striking out 13 in the complete-game victory.
Klinkhamer and Bowers each posted two hits, two runs and an RBI to pace HU offensively. Knous added two hits and scored a run.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the nightcap as the scoreboard read zeros until the fourth inning when the Foresters posted three runs. After Bowers tripled to open the inning and Brita Kuiper was hit by a pitch, Knous unloaded a two-run double and eventually came around to score after stealing third and scampering home on a Cougar error to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
It was an evenly played game after that as both teams scored four runs over the final three innings which proved to be more than enough for the Foresters to notch the win. Kuiper shouldered the bulk of HU’s offense during the final innings. She delivered her first dinger of the season in the top of the fifth to plate two runs and knocked in another run in the seventh as the Foresters cruised to the 7-4 win.
Bowers continued to dominate the plate by going 3-for-4 and scoring two runs. She is currently hitting .496 and boasts a .888 slugging percentage. Kuiper finished with two hits, two runs and three RBI while Knous hammered out two hits, scored a run and drove in two more.
Marcie McDougle was spectacular on the mound. She scattered eight hits and allowed four runs, only one earned, while striking out two for the complete-game victory. With this win, she moves to 8-2 on the season.
The Foresters are back in action today to face Calumet College of St. Joseph for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
