Foresters drop two to Cougars

The Cougars of Spring Arbor University got two solid performances at the plate to sweep the Forester softball team, 5-1 and 11-9.

In a sloppy game one that featured four errors by each team, the Cougars took advantage of the Foresters’ miscues in the fourth inning as they exploded for five runs on five hits and four errors to jump ahead 5-0. After back-to-back errors and a passed ball by Spring Arbor in the top of the sixth, HU got one back when Kate Dwyer hit an infield single to plate the Foresters’ only run of the day but it wouldn’t be enough as the Cougars held on for the easy win.

Molly Long took the loss for HU giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits and one walk while striking out three. Dwyer, Katie Bowers and Melissa Werling each collected a hit in the HU’s losing effort.

In game two, the Foresters heated up at the plate for eleven hits but couldn’t take full advantage of six Cougar errors in the sixth inning as Spring Arbor held on for the 11-9 victory. Brita Kuiper’s RBI-double in the top of the first gave HU the early 2-0 lead. They added two more runs in the second before the Cougars stormed back in the bottom half of the frame. Pitcher Chelsea Brancheau ignited the scoring frenzy by unloading one over the left field fence. Spring Arbor kept swinging as they hammered out eight more hits to score eight runs to snatch an 8-4 lead. Over the next three innings, both teams scored three runs to make it 11-7 but HU kept things interesting in the sixth. Aubrey Garner started HU’s rally with a single to third. After scoring two runs on Garner’s hit and six Cougar errors, it looked like the Foresters had Spring Arbor right where they wanted them but they came up short as the Cougars made the necessary plays to get HU’s next two batters out to squelch any hope of a come-from-behind victory.

Stacie Rawnsley took the loss for the Foresters giving up 11 runs on 14 hits and no walks while striking out three. Garner paced HU with three hits and two RBI. Werling finished with a single and a two-run homer.
