After claiming the men’s tennis
singles ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Midwest Regional Championship at Aquinas College two weeks ago, HU freshman Vlad Khudziy earned an automatic bid to the 2010 ITA National Small College Championships.
As one of the best eight players in small college tennis from around the United States, Khudziy dropped a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Bence Toth from Auburn-Montgomery in first round action of the ITA Championships. He bounced back to beat Yvon Haessig from Union College 6-2, 6-4 on Friday. He finished up the tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Charlie Rice from Embry-Riddle to finish fifth overall.
"Vlad had a very strong showing at the tournament, except for some freshman nerves in his opening match. From that match on, Vlad showed the kind of focus and determination needed to rebound from his opening loss and win his remaining two matches, both in straight sets,” commented Coach Ferguson. “I'm very proud of Vlad's hard work this week and believe he represented Huntington University well."
The HU men’s tennis team finished the fall season 13-0. As the 2010 MCC Tournament Champions, they earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament to be held in Mobile, Alabama, this spring.
