It was a perfect ending to a perfect season as the HU men's tennis
team went undefeated in regular season and capped it off by winning the MCC conference tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament May 17-21 in Mobile, Alabama.
After beating Bethel in first round action of the tourney, the top-seeded Foresters slid past Indiana Wesleyan 5-4 in the semi-finals and then cruised to a 7-2 win over Spring Arbor to earn the title of MCC conference champs.
Against the Cougars in the championship match, HU was ignited by the play of Jose Hungria and Jameel Brenneman at #2 doubles. With the score knotted 1-1 after #1 and #3 doubles, the Foresters were desperate for a win at the pivotal #2 doubles match. Struggling early, Hungria and Brenneman found themselves down 1-4 but in a very emotional and intense battle the HU duo was able to eventually pull away and win the all important second point for the Foresters. This win set the stage for singles action where the team dominated, scoring five out of the six points.
"I'm very happy and extremely proud of the way this team performed this season. They worked hard from day one and kept their success in perspective," stated Coach Ferguson. "The success of this season belongs to more than just the team. Many people were involved in helping us with our team goals, and I want to thank everyone that contributed. We couldn't have achieved this level of success without the support of the campus community and our Athletic Department."
