FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Sophomore Danny Cawley netted the game’s only goal in the 58th minute to lead the Taylor University Trojans past the HU men’s soccer team 1-0 Saturday afternoon in a Crossroads clash at the Fort Wayne Sport Club.
Shots on goal were at a premium in this defensive battle with the Trojans holding the slight 6-4 statistical advantage.
After a scoreless first half, the Trojans finally found cracked HU’s defense 18 minutes into the second period on a restart in what proved to be the game-winner.
“We gave up a goal because of a momentary lack of focus,” noted Coach Lawson. “We didn’t match-up quick enough and then failed to clear the box on that restart.
Coach Lawson went on to say. “With the exception of that particular play, I thought we accomplished what we set out to do defensively. I was particularly pleased with how we bounced back after giving up five goals to Bethel on Wednesday.
“We struggled in the first half offensively because Taylor forces you to play at a fast pace. But I thought once we adjusted to their speed, we showed that we can play both sides of the ball. Now we just need to play with that confidence from opening kick-off.”
Drew Mattingly finished with four saves in the losing effort.
For the match, Taylor logged 11 shots to HU’s six and owned a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
With this loss, the Foresters drop to 7-7-2 on the season, 2-5 in conference matches. HU is currently sitting in 8th place in conference standings but certainly isn’t out of the mix. Grace, Taylor and Marian are in a three-way tie for fourth with three wins apiece in Crossroads play.
HU hits the road on Tuesday to face Spring Arbor University at 7:00 p.m.
