Essig headed to Huntington

Huntington University men’s soccer coach Russ Lawson has announced the addition of Monroe High School standout Jake Essig to the 2010 Forester roster.

As a striker for the Hornets, Essig amassed 49 goals and 19 assists while leading his high school to three Southwest Buckeye League conference titles. 2009 was a banner year for Jake as he was selected SWBL Conference Player of the Year. He was also named to the MVSSCA All Star and All District First Team as well as the Ohio State ODP Team.

“We are receiving a player who has the potential to have a tremendous career at HU. Jake’s work ethic, composure on the ball and willingness to go at defenders will be a big lift for years to come,” stated Coach Lawson. “Jake is currently playing club ball for Cincinnati United Premiere in preparation for this fall. As a member of the CUP team, he has won the Mid American Soccer Classic twice, the Nike Cup in Columbus and the Warrior Tournament in Dayton. His transition to the collegiate game should be smooth, allowing him to challenge our returning players for minutes up front or on the flank. He has great offensive instincts and knows how to finish.”

Jake is currently undecided on a major but is leaning towards psychology, education or recreation management. He is the son of Jenny and John MacDonald from Monroe, Ohio.

The Huntington University Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past twelve years, Huntington has produced 70 NAIA All-America honors and 186 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations. U.S. News & World Report ranks Huntington among the best colleges in the Midwest.
