Merryman joins HU’s 1,000 point club

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Huntington University junior Shane Merryman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) reached a significant milestone in his career as a Forester over the weekend.

Heading into the game against Mount Vernon Nazarene University on January 5, the 6-5 forward needed just two points to become the 43rd player to join Huntington’s 1000-point club. He reached this mark less than four minutes into the contest when he muscled one in down low.

Basketball runs in the genes for the Merryman family as Shane joins the ranks with his grandfather Dean Merryman. The elder Merryman attended Huntington from 1958-1962 and for his career averaged 20.2 points per outing. He scored a total of 1,855 points and currently claims the eighth spot on the Foresters’ all-time scoring list.

To date, Shane has accumulated 1,021 points in 79 games for a career average of 12.9 points per contest. Through 17 games this season, the Carroll High School native is ranked 11th in NAIA Division II in scoring (21.65) and second in field goal percentage (.656). He also pulls down a team-high 6.4 boards every night.
The Huntington University Foresters compete in 16 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past decade, Huntington has produced 46 NAIA All-America honors and 202 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations.
