Hinen, Benedict hit milestones for Columbia City

Future Foresters join Eagles' 1,000 point club

COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. — Columbia City's boys basketball program hasn't had a player pass 1,000 career points since 1976, when Brent Johnson graduated with 1,074.

The 2013 Eagles' team had its second player pass the milestone, as Derek Hinen scored 12 points against Norwell to set his all-time scoring at 1,005.

His teammate, Drew Benedict, passed the mark earlier this season, in the team's third game of the season against Northfield.

"I'm sure there's not a whole lot of teams that have two players with more than 1,000 points," Hinen said.

Benedict now has 1,209 points, only 400 points away from Columbia City's all-time scoring record.

The record of 1,646 points was set by Bill Schwarz in 1960.

The school-high hasn't been touched for more than 50 years, and Benedict is the closest player to reach the mark in more than 30 years.

Along with Schwarz and Johnson, Tom Wood is the only other Columbia City boys basketball player with more than 1,000 points. Wood finished his career with 1,045.

Doug Sheckler, 2004 graduate and Indiana All-Star barely missed the mark, with 967 career points.

While Benedict and Hinen enjoy the honor, they said they are more focused on the team's success than their own.

Both players touted each other, saying they couldn't have reached the milestone without the other.

While both players are focused on the current season, they said they will appreciate the milestone more later.
