Foresters take second at Davenport tourney

Up against #11-ranked Davenport University (7-0), the HU men's basketball team (7-1) suffered their first loss of the season, 95-84, to take second at the Davenport tournament.

A Seth Kisler jumper gave HU a 14-10 lead at the 15:28 mark but the Panthers took control after that with a 16-2 run over a six-minute span to give them a double digit lead, 26-16, with just under nine minutes left in the half. HU responded by scoring the next nine points to cut the lead to one but the Panthers returned the favor by matching that run to balloon their lead back to ten, 35-25. By halftime the Foresters had trimmed the Panther's lead to 39-33 behind back-to-back buckets by Bobby Jolliff and Kellen Zawadzki.

Over the first nine minutes of the second stanza Davenport stretched the lead to 69-50. HU pulled within eight at 85-77 after two freebies from Tyler Shively with 2:12 left but solid free throw shooting down the stretch secured the win for the Panthers.

Zawadzki finished with 34 points and five assists to lead HU. Caleb Kennedy added a double double of 14 points and 13 boards while Shively netted 15 points and dished out five assists. James Nelson led the Panthers with 31 points and ten rebounds. Nathan Cox came off the bench to score 26 points.

Zawadzki was named to the All-Tournament team.

Huntington opens up conference play on Tuesday when they host Marian University at 7:00 p.m.
