HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Foresters continued their winning ways Saturday afternoon with a 102-60 blowout over Indiana University Kokomo (5-8) at Platt Arena.
With this win, HU wraps up the 2012 portion of their schedule on a six-game win streak and improves to 10-5.
Huntington scored 22 points off IU Kokomo turnovers while the Cougars cashed in on ten points from HU miscues but the real difference in the contest came in the paint where HU outscored their visitors 52-18.
The Foresters continued to prove they are the top shooting team in NAIA Division II by shooting a scorching 65.5 percent (36-for-55) for the game which included going 10-for-19 for 52.6 percent behind the arc.
Shane Merryman was nearly perfect on the day by going 8-for-10 from the field and knocking down all ten of his freebies to finish with a game-high 29 points and game-best eight rebounds. Over the last five games, the Fort Wayne native has only missed ten shots from the field, going 44-for-54 for 81.5 percent.
Stephen Jones poured in a career-best 15 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Alec Peterson added 13 points, pulled down seven boards and swatted four shots while TJ Short and Ryan Boester each tossed in 12 points.
The Cougars never stood a chance as HU raced out to a 15-0 lead and never looked back. Four Foresters put points on the board in the opening four minutes of the contest to contribute to the early debacle. Merryman finished the half with 16 points to push his team’s lead to as many as 26 before wrapping up the half with a 51-29 lead.
Things didn’t get any better for IU Kokomo in the final twenty minutes as the Foresters showed no mercy. HU extended the lead to 38 within the first five minutes and then cruised to the runaway win.
Jared Lawrence paced the Cougars with 14 points. Joby Renbarger was IU Kokomo’s only other double digit scorer with 12.
The Foresters are off until January 2 when they jump back into the throes of league play to host No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan University at 7:00 p.m.
