Huntington, Ind.— The Lady Foresters of the women’s cross country team are gearing up for the NAIA National Cross Country Championships this Saturday, November 23, in Kenosha, Wis. Last year’s national runner-up, John Ngure, will represent Huntington College in the men’s race.
The women’s team earned their spot to the 23rd NAIA National Cross Country Championships for the fourth time in five years by placing third at the Region VIII Championships at Indiana Wesleyan on November 9. Having surpassed two previously ranked teams at that meet, the Foresters qualified to nationals with an at-large bid. The women’s 5k race of the national championships will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Leading the way for the Foresters this year has been senior Natalie Guenin and junior Jenny Cook. Guenin has led the Foresters’ late season spurt with strong finishes at the Mid-Central Conference and Regional Championships, earning herself All-Conference and All-Region honors. Cook, who started the season running first for the Foresters, has dealt with nagging injuries throughout the past few weeks, missing three of the seven meets this season. She did, however, return for the regional meet, finishing with a strong 11th-place overall finish.
Also running consistent for the Foresters this season has been sophomore Elizabeth Ngugi, who stepped up recently, finishing fifth overall at the regional meet on November 9. Following Ngugi are freshman Courtney Gullickson, junior Brooke Welch, senior Carrie Reese, and sophomore Missy Kostrewa.
Ngure will toe the line for the 47th NAIA National Cross Country Championships at 11:45 a.m., on Saturday. He is a three-time cross country All-American for the Foresters, having his best national race at last year’s meet with a second-place finish. This season, Ngure has finished first or second individually in all but one race. He has run consistently in all seven meets, his time ranging from 24:52 to 25:46.
