HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene University closed out the season series with the Foresters Tuesday afternoon at Forest Glen Park with a pair of wins, 5-1, 9-1, to claim three of the four series wins and improve to 19-8 overall, 11-5 in the conference while HU drops to 7-17 overall, 7-7 in league play.
HU held its only lead of the contest after its first at bats when Adam Christner, who led off with a double to right, scored on Blake Ayers’ RBI-ground out. It was a short-lived advantage as the Cougars took the lead in the third and tacked on three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cruise to the win.
Christner and Marc Bowers each hammered out two hits to account for four of the HU’s five hits. Brock Gower was the only other Forester to pick up a hit in the contest.
Derek McKinney took the loss for HU as he gave up seven hits and four runs in 3.1 innings of work. Blake Hohlbein tossed 3.2 innings of relief and allowed three hits and one run.
The Cougars wasted no time taking control of the nightcap. After scoring twice in the opening frame, MVNU took advantage of two HU errors and pounded out five hits in the second on their way to blowing the game wide open with six runs to take commanding 8-0 lead.
HU’s only run came in the bottom of the second on a Dustin Rutledge RBI-groundout as the Foresters would get no closer the rest of the way and eventually concede to the 9-1 loss.
Ayers and Bowers finished with two hits apiece in the losing effort.
Cody Walters had a rough night on the mound. He was tagged with the loss, giving up eight runs and eight hits in 1.2 innings of work before being relieved by Kyle Zerfas who tossed the next 4.1 innings and gave up a run on three hits. Gowers provided the final inning of scoreless relief.
The Foresters are back in action on Thursday to host Bethel College at 4:30 p.m.
