The Forester baseball
team (12-10, 5-1) pounded out 27 hits against Goshen College as they swept the Maple Leafs in convincing fashion, 12-1 and 12-5.
With two outs in the top of the first of game one, the Foresters strung together five hits to score three runs and grab the early lead. Goshen responded with a run in the bottom half of their frame but HU plated two more in the top of the third to extend their lead to four. Andrew Drummond's three-run blast to left in the following inning broke the game wide open as HU enjoyed the 7-1 lead. The Foresters added four more insurance runs in the sixth to secure the 12-1 blowout.
Mitch Bowers went the distance for HU, limiting Goshen to two hits while issuing no walks and striking out ten. Adam Christner paced the Foresters at the plate with three hits and an RBI. Drummond, Ryan Shell and Jamon Hammel each finished with three RBI.
In the nightcap, the Maple Leafs jumped out to the 2-0 lead after an inning of play but the Foresters five-run second inning gave them a lead they would never relinquish. After Travis Frantz singled to center to get things started, Eric Harpring's triple gave HU their first run of the game. With the bases loaded, Christner finished off the scoring frenzy with a double to right that plated three more HU runs.
The Foresters added four more runs in the top of the fourth. The inning ended much like the second but this time it was Harpring who doubled with the bases loaded to land him three RBI and extend HU's lead to 9-2. Goshen responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning but the Foresters matched that in the sixth as they cruised to the 12-5 victory.
Cody Walters earned the win on the mound giving up five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two. Frantz led the Foresters by going three-for-three at the plate while Harpring collected four RBI.
