HU falls in tourney opener

As the third seed in the Mid-Central Conference Tournament, the Foresters faced fourth-seeded Taylor University in their opening round game and fell 5-4 on a walk-off bases-loaded single by Trojan pinch-hitter Cassisy Emery in the bottom of the ninth.

After three scoreless innings, Taylor was the first to get on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Foresters had a chance to get a least one back in the top of the fifth, but when Chris Menzie stumbled rounding third, he was thrown out trying to return to third for the final out of the inning.

HU finally got on the board in the seventh when Andrew Drummond scored on a passed ball. Justin Branock then evened the score with a single to left that drove in Ryan Shell. The Trojans answered back with two more in their half of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead.

In the eighth, the Foresters again squandered a great scoring opportunity. A single by Eric Schultz and a double by Eric Harpring put two runners in scoring position with one out and the meat of the order coming up, but again, HU came up empty stranding three baserunners in the inning. In their final at-bat, the Foresters got a couple clutch two-out hits from Schultz and Harpring to finally even the score at 4-4. HU needed three outs to send it to extra innings, but Taylor had other ideas. The Trojans loaded the bases with one out and Emery drilled a line drive to left to end the contest.

Mitch Bowers, who came on in relief of starter Drew Taylor, took the loss for the Foresters. He threw 2 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on five hits and two walks. Schultz and Harpring each had three hits and an RBI to lead HU at the plate.

The loss sends the Foresters (25-18) to the losers' bracket where they will face Marian College, the #6 seed, today at noon.
