Huntington, Ind. - After losing to William Woods in the opening game of the 2011 NAIA National Championships, the Foresters couldn’t stave off elimination as the fourth-seeded Owls handed HU their second loss at the AUM Baseball Complex on Saturday afternoon to bring their season to a close.
With the score knotted 1-1 after two innings of play, the Owls took control in the third by plating three runs and then blew the game open in the fifth by exploding for eight runs to take a comfortable 12-1 lead. The Foresters got two back in the top of the sixth on Josh Lanphier’s RBI-double and a wild pitch but WWU quickly answered with three of their own in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead to 15-3.
The Foresters didn’t go down without a fight as Jamon Hammel crushed a three-run shot over the right field fence in the seventh to push HU’s run total to six. HU added two more in the next inning on run-scoring doubles by Adam Christner and Eric Schultz but the deficit proved too much to overcome as the Owls cruised to the 15-8 win.
Tyler Palmer took the loss for HU. In three innings on the mound, he gave up four runs on six hits. Lanphier collected half of the Foresters’ hits by going 4-for-5 from the plate. Christner finished with two hits, scored two runs and drove in another in the losing effort.
The Foresters wrap up their season with an overall record of 23-25.
