LAKELAND, Fla. - After being swept by Trinity Christian College on Wednesday, Huntington bounced back with an impressive 4-2 win over Roosevelt University (Ill.) on Thursday at Southeastern University’s Ted A. Broer Stadium behind a dazzling performance on the mound by HU ace Mitch Bowers.
Bowers struck out six batters on his way to giving up two runs on five hits. Brian Kirschbaum worked a scoreless two innings of relief to pick up the save.
"We got a great outing from Mitch today,” noted Coach Frame. “He was very special. We played good defense and were able to manufacture some runs. We still have to get much better offensively, but that will come."
After spotting the Lakers a 1-0 lead through the first two innings of play, Adam Christner strolled home on a balk and Jamon Hammel knocked one into right to drive in another in the bottom of the third to give the Foresters a lead that stuck.
Two Laker errors in the next frame eventually resulted in two more runs for HU with Schultz getting credit for both on a single to left to extend HU’s lead to 4-1. Roosevelt pulled within two at 4-2 in the seventh but would get no closer.
Schultz and Hammel each posted two hits along with two and one RBI respectively to pace the Foresters.
The Foresters (4-7) are back in action today at noon to take on Concordia University (Neb.).
