Huntington, Ind.—The Huntington University Athletics Department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 29 through Nov. 5. Women’s volleyball sophomore Brittney Smelser and men’s cross country freshman Tobias Sauter earned the honor for their outstanding efforts during the week’s competitions.
Brittney Smelser, a business management major from Huntington, Ind. (Huntington North High School), helped lead Huntington to a 3-1 record for the week. Smelser led the team in kills in all four matches totaling 101 for the week. She had highs of 7.0 kills per game against Michigan Dearborn and 6.4 per game against Indiana Wesleyan. Smelser is leading the team with her 4.3 kills per game and 94 aces on the year. The Foresters concluded their regular season with a 23-7 record and will now host St. Francis in the first round of the Mid-Central Conference tournament on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
Tobias Sauter
Tobias Sauter, a recreation management major from Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany helped lead the Foresters to a third place finish in the NAIA Region VIII Cross Country Championships with his eighth place finish in just his second race of the season. Sauter was Huntington’s top finisher with a time of 25:34. His top 15 finish also earned him NAIA All-Region honors. The 20th-ranked Foresters now await word on an at-large bid to the NAIA National Championships which will be held on Nov. 17 at the University of Wisconsin – Parkside.
