HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Huntington University Athletic Department announced its Athlete of the Week for the week of January 7-13, 2012. For the second time this season, men’s basketball junior Shane Merryman earned the honor for his outstanding effort during the week’s competitions.

Merryman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) reached a significant milestone in his career as a Forester. Heading into the game against Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, the 6-5 forward needed just two points to become the 43rd player to join Huntington’s 1000-point club. He reached this mark less than four minutes into the contest when he muscled one in down low.

To date, Shane has accumulated 1,021 points in 79 games for a career average of 12.9 points per contest. Through 17 games this season, the Carroll High School native is ranked 11th in NAIA Division II in scoring (21.65) and second in field goal percentage (.656). He also pulls down a team-high 6.4 boards every night.
The Huntington University Foresters compete in 16 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past decade, Huntington has produced 46 NAIA All-America honors and 202 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations. U.S.News & World Report ranks Huntington among the best colleges in the Midwest.
