U.S.News & World Report ranks Huntington among “America’s Best Colleges”

Huntington, Ind.— For the tenth consecutive year, U.S.News & World Report has ranked Huntington College among the best comprehensive colleges in the Midwest. The magazine’s 2005 guide to America’s Best Colleges places Huntington 17th among 108 institutions in the Midwestern Comprehensive Colleges category and third among the Indiana schools listed in this group.

One of the nation's top Christian colleges, Huntington offers over 70 academic concentrations, including seven new degree programs to be launched within the next year. The new programs include a master’s degree in education and bachelor’s degrees in digital media arts, economics and finance, political studies, social work, sports ministry, and worship leadership.

“We are very pleased that U.S.News & World Report has again recognized the quality of Huntington College and listed us among the best institutions in our region. It’s a testimony to the strength of our faculty, the scholastic achievement of our students, and the ongoing financial partnership of our alumni,” said Huntington College president G. Blair Dowden.

The ranking reflects Huntington’s growing academic reputation, Dowden said, adding that over 80 percent of Huntington College faculty hold the Ph.D or another terminal degree. The number of full-time faculty, average class size, the faculty-student ratio, and the availability of instructional resources all factor into the U.S.News rankings.

To rank schools, U.S.News first organizes colleges and universities by category and then ranks them within each group. Rankings are based on a wide range of criteria, including academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

In Indiana, St. Mary’s College and Taylor University were ranked first and third, respectively, in the Midwest Comprehensive Colleges category. Following Huntington, Franklin College, Bethel College, Manchester College, St. Joseph’s College and Tri-State University were also listed among ranked institutions in this category.

Listed again this year as a top-tier Midwestern college in a twelve-state region, Huntington College has consistently fared well in the annual U.S.News & World Report rankings.

All U.S.News rankings will appear on the magazine’s web site (www.USNews.com) on Friday, August 20. College-bound students can use the site to search for colleges according to their own interests, fill out interactive worksheets and search for scholarship and financial aid information. The America’s Best Colleges newsstand book and the weekly edition of U.S.News & World Report magazine (containing many of the rankings) will both go on sale Monday, August 23.
