Huntington, Ind. — Huntington University has named Kelly Savage the new chair of the Board of Trustees. She is the first woman to serve in that post in the university’s 113-year history.
Savage, a native of Grandville, Mich., has served on the board since 2001 and as the vice chair since 2004. She replaces Ed Souers who has been the chairman for the past six years.
“Kelly is a gifted executive with a strategic vision and focus. She is a very loyal Huntington University alumna who works to encourage students and donors to consider HU. She will be an outstanding board chair and will provide wise counsel and advice,” said Huntington University President G. Blair Dowden.
Savage is the vice president for global human resources at Amway Corp. in Ada, Mich. She is a 1983 graduate of Huntington University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and she also holds an MBA from Colorado State University. She has been actively involved with the university for many years through committees and various speaking engagements, including the Forester Lecture Series.
Savage was officially elected to the position at the Oct. 15 Board of Trustees meeting.
Also during the board meeting, Dr. Herb Schumm was elected to the post of vice chair, and Nancy Hull was elected secretary. Schumm, a 1982 alumnus of Spencerville, Ohio, is a medical doctor and the vice president for medical affairs at St. Rita’s Hospital in Lima, Ohio. A native of Spencerville, Ohio, he has served on the board since 2008. Hull, of Belmont, Mich., is an assistant professor of English at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. A board member since 2008 and a 1974 graduate of the university, she was named the 2010 Alumnus of the Year.
Three new board members were also elected at the October meeting. Larry New and Robin Wright are returning to the board after a brief hiatus, and Molly Deuberry joins the board as the new alumni board president.
A native of Yorktown, Ind., New previously served on the board from 1996 to 2008. He is the president of Heritage Medical Group and owner of CrownPointe Communities. As a 1971 graduate of the university, he was named Alumnus of the Year in 1982.
Wright, a 1982 HU graduate from Columbia City, Ind., is the executive vice president of STAR Financial Bank. He previously served on the board from 2009 to 2010.
Deuberry, a 2001 HU graduate from Chesterton, Ind., is the director of communications for the Indianapolis Department of Works. She was officially named the alumni board president in May.
