Huntington, Ind.—Huntington University education majors are finding teaching positions after graduation, despite the volatile marketplace.

The HU Department of Education recently completed an employability report that showed 95 percent of graduates from the education program were employed in an education-related position in less than one year after graduation. Of those graduates, 80 percent had accepted positions in Indiana.

“To us when we saw not only the high employability rate but also the high rate of graduates employed in Indiana, that told us that our graduates were being very competitive in a tight job market,” said Dr. Terrell Peace, department chair and professor of education.

From the Class of 2009, the HU Department of Education graduated 29 teaching candidates. Of the 27 surveyed, 70 percent are teaching full-time, and 22 percent are teaching part-time. The remaining 8 percent are working in professions unrelated to education.

The report was conducted to provide valid and honest information to prospective students and their parents.

“We hear from school administrators how well-prepared our students are and how they know what’s going on in the classroom,” Peace said. “Now, we have the data to back it up.”

The Annual Graduate Employability Report examined 110 graduates from the 2007, 2008 and 2009 graduating classes from the HU Department of Education. The data was gathered from alumni records, formal announcements and personal contacts.

A summary of the report is available online at www.huntington.edu/education. Detailed data is available upon request.
