Huntington, Ind.— Go, You Chicken Fat, Go!, the next Gateway course in the EXCEL Program for Adults at Huntington College, will teach students positive strategies for weight control. When asked what his students should expect to gain out of this class, Dr. Paul Smith, professor of exercise science and physical education at Huntington College, answered, “Not weight!”

Go, You Chicken Fat, Go! will make the student aware of how the body processes energy, how to create an effective training stimulus, and what goals are realistic given the lean mass of the individual. The course, which runs from 6-10 p.m., on Monday’s from October 21 – November 11, will address five topics: caloric balance and body metabolism, body composition theory and measurement, body fatness and societal values, dietary restriction and control, and losing body fatness via increasing and maintaining muscle.

“This class will change the way you think about fat,” said Smith. “It will also give you positive strategies for weight control and help you to be realistic in your goal setting.”

The course will explore various aspects of weight control including spot reducing, ideal body weight estimation, body image, motivation and goal setting, the purpose of different foods, dieting fallacies, exercise requirements, lifestyle changes, and much more. During the class, students will participate in a body fat analysis using skinfolds.

"The winter months can be really tough for some of us to stay physically active and, therefore, control our weight. In this course, Dr. Smith will guide you in ways to do both," said Kathleen O’Donnell, director of the EXCEL Program.

Dr. Smith earned his B.S. in Biology from Wheaton College in 1976, his M.S. in Physical Education from Indiana University in 1979, and his and Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from Indiana University in 1987. He taught for five years at other colleges before coming to Huntington College in 1987, and coached track and cross country at Wheaton College, Campbell University and Valparaiso University. Smith has published several articles in the area of exercise physiology and has presented papers on sports medicine at national conferences. He competed as a distance runner for 25 years and continues to enjoy running recreationally, with over 30 years of experience. Besides exercise physiology and running, baseball card collecting is one of his passions.
