HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Canterbury Middle School in Fort Wayne took home first place in the annual Huntington University Middle School Mathematics Competition on April 17.
Twenty-two area middle schools competed for individual and team awards in demonstration of mathematical abilities. The goal of the competition is to support and encourage the efforts of students seeking to achieve in mathematics.
Canterbury captured first place with 780 points, Discovery Middle School in Granger, Ind., took second place with 780 points and Concord Junior High in Elkhart earned third with 725 points. Canterbury edged out Discovery by earning 40 points versus 30 points in the team competition.
The top three students were: Matthew Shan, an eighth grader from Discovery Middle School with 200 points for first place; Jonathan Zhou, an eighth grader from Canterbury Middle School with 200 points for second place; and Jonathan Harley, an eighth grader from Discovery Middle School with 195 points for third place. Shan beat out Zhou for first place on the one question tie-breaker.
The mathematics competition is made up of three rounds. The first round is a 20-question written exam comprised of questions from algebra, geometry and general mathematics. Students can earn a total of 100 points for the exam. The individual round of the competition is made up of 10 questions. Students are given a minute and a half to complete each question. Each question answered correctly earns the student 10 points. The final round, the team round, provides additional points for the team score. Students are provided with several problems that are more challenging and best solved through the cooperative efforts of the team. A total of 40 points is possible for the final round.
